Updated: Dec 11

Strings of Inspiration

This week, St Edward's School was treated to a captivating performance by a select group of young musicians from Winchester College. These talented string players graced our stage, sharing their musical talent and inspiring our pupils with their passion for music.

The performance was more than just a concert; it was a cultural exchange and an opportunity for our pupils and staff to witness the power of music first-hand. The musicians' dedication and skill were evident in every note, captivating the audience and leaving a lasting impression.

The performance aligns with our commitment to fostering cultural capital and encouraging pupils to explore the arts. Music is a source of joy and a powerful tool for personal development, creativity, and academic success.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the musicians of Winchester College for sharing their talents with us.

Visit to the Museum of Military Medicine and Picnic by Basingstoke Canal

Today, our class embarked on an educational and fun-filled trip to explore history and nature in one fantastic day. We visited the Museum of Military Medicine, followed by a scenic picnic by the Basingstoke Canal. The experience left us enriched and inspired!

Our first stop was the Museum of Military Medicine, where we delved into the fascinating history of military healthcare. The exhibits showcased how medical practices have evolved on the battlefield, from the Napoleonic wars to modern-day operations.

After a morning immersed in history, we headed to the tranquil surroundings of Basingstoke Canal for a well-deserved picnic. The canal’s calm waters and lush greenery provided the perfect backdrop for relaxation. We found a picnic wooden table and enjoyed our sandwiches while making the most of the autumn sunshine. We then had a short walk along the towpath and met a fisherman, paddleboarders and Mr. Holmes’ new project!

Artists of the Week

Fauvism

Fauvism was an art movement that emerged in France in the early 20th century. It was characterised by:

  • Bold colors

  • Expressive brushwork

  • Subjective response to nature

  • Rejection of traditional space

The name "Fauvism" comes from the derogatory term les fauves, which means "the wild beasts", coined by critic Louis Vauxcelles. The artists themselves embraced the term, feeling it accurately described their style.

Harley finished his excellent ‘Fauvist’ piece this week using acrylic paint.

He’s also worked hard and produced a great effort. He paid particular attention to the relationship between warm and cold colours. He also focused on nature and landscapes.
